February’s Stone: Amethyst in Design

February is Amethyst Month!

This gemstone seems to tick all the boxes! Well-priced… tick. Easy to source in a variety of cuts and sizes… tick. Versatile… tick. Can offer something unique… tick!!!

Once reserved for royalty, relatively plentiful supplies have allowed amethyst to be more widely available in modern times. Its availability and affordability allow the stone to feature in both mass-market as well as custom designer pieces, making it one of the world’s most popular coloured gems!

We love working with amethyst and are excited to share this vibrant gem with you this month!

Feature Design: Stem Gems with Amethyst

Here, the rich colour of these amethysts are paired elegantly with 9ct yellow gold. They feature striking marquise amethysts as a fresh variation of our ‘Stem’ design. Comfortable, lightweight and easy to wear, these little beauties are perfect day or night! The minimal, yet artistic form won’t go unnoticed!

Discovering Ametrine

Ametrine is a spectacular, naturally-occurring stone that is a mixture of amethyst and citrine. It offers a unique variation that is not too widely known and is still very affordable! The off-centre, open-setting of our ‘Discovery’ ring allows the spirited Ametrine gemstone room to shine with its bi-colour hues of yellow and purple. Hidden behind the facets of the emerald cut stone is a hand engraved initial for you to discover…

amethyst_diamond_ring_unique_contemporary_silver_white_gold_custom_design_fbAmethysts can be winning features in custom design projects! To create this custom ring, the design of our ‘Discovery’ ring was adopted to feature our client’s large emerald-cut amethyst and two smaller diamonds, which she re-used. It illustrate how well stones can work together when they differ in scale, while the off-centre, minimalist style allows the emerald-cut amethyst to truly shine!

Affordable Elegance

The affordability of amethysts can make some custom projects possible on a smaller budget – especially in the case of earrings where at least two (usually identical) stones are needed or where the design requires a large feature-stone.

These 9ct gold earrings support sizeable stones in their contemporary and elegant design.

How gorgeous is this amethyst! It was a sentimental gem that was passed down to our client. She wanted to transform her original decorative and uncomfortable ring into a new contemporary piece!

Big, bold and beautiful! This creative, geometric ring is designed to support a WHOPPER of an amethyst! The stone is situated on the side of the finger so it doesn’t sit too high. A-mazing

Do you have an amethyst? Why not use them in a custom jewellery piece or add them to an existing Bilingual design?

Give a Meaningful Gift

At Bilingual, we’re all about meaningful design. And that means we also care about helping you find a meaningful gift!

We work hard to create thoughtful, concept-based designs that don’t only look beautiful, but are enhanced by the ideas and sentiments they carry as vessels of meaning. Bilingual jewellery pieces are reminders of the people, places, values and experiences that are important to us.

As we think towards Christmas and the season of ‘giving’, what kind of gift will you give to the people you love? Most of us have enough ‘things’, but to be able to give a meaningful gift that has value beyond its function – that’s a special experience.

Here is a peek into a few of our collections that are embedded with meaning and are wonderful pieces to give to the people who matter most.

‘Forbidden’ is a collection full of little treasures that remind us to enjoy the good things in life. In the business of the day-to-day, we often feel a tinge of guilt for allowing ourselves a little treat, enjoying a moment or a well-deserved break – but these are good things to enjoy. The collection includes pieces with a single twisted wire, illustrating the serpent and exploring perceptions of temptation.  It is represented in as twisted wire which makes its way through the leaves and finally into the fruit. Pearls and leaves represent the good things we long for.

Is there someone you know who needs to remember to stop and do something for herself every once in a while?

Inspired by circus movements, each piece in this unisex collection can be interchanged to form a neckpiece or ring, creating an element of intrigue. As a rings these pieces represent the skills of juggling, contortion & acrobatics. As a neckpieces, they are suspended on a red silk thread and  secured with a knot, similarly to the act of aerial silk.

Let’s face it, life can seem like a bit of a circus at times! Are you inspired by someone’s ability to juggle many things at once or appreciative of the friend who’s ‘bent over backwards’ for you this year? Perhaps ‘Cirque’ would be a meaningful gift for them!

Think of all the connections you’ve made with people over your lifetime – people with whom your life has become intricately woven. Some of them might seem to have happened by chance. Some people come to play quite a significant role in our lives, even though their presence might only be transitory. How often do we meet someone new only to find out that out paths have already crossed without realising!

‘Woven’ explores the bind of a chance meeting and the way we become entwined with someone during a particular period of our life. The pieces in this series feature a fluid, enhanced loop that represents the point at which paths are crossed and become ‘woven’ forever, for a period of time or for a vital, unforgettable moment.

The perfect gift for the person whose relationship you are supremely grateful for!

Give a meaningful gift this Christmas.

Need it now? Here’s what’s already in store, waiting to be picked up!

Black Opal Country: Mining Rare Gemstones in Lightning Ridge

Awake before the rooster crows, it’s a balmy morning at the Grawin opal fields. Situated on the edge of the outback in north west NSW, about 80km from Lightning Ridge, this is Black Opal Country. Australia is the largest producer of opal in the world, and black opal is found nowhere but here. Black opal – the rarest and most valuable kind of opal, possesses a mysterious dark tone created by its black potch base that work to enhance the opal’s colour.

The Opal Miner

We’ve been staying with some locals, Pete and Leanne, who live in the Grawin. Pete began opal mining at a nearby field called ‘Sheepyard’ in 1988 and has been at it ever since.

Like the opals found here, the land surrounding Lightning Ridge is a unique and captivating place.

Originally from the NSW south coast, I ask Pete what brought him out here.

“There was a bloke who used to fish with my brother down the south coast,” Pete recalls. “He was living up here mining and said,  “Wanna come up for visit?” I liked the area; ended up buying this place. Was expecting to make good money – like gold mining – but it doesn’t work like that.”

I ask whether he’s ever found himself in a dangerous situation while he’s been mining.

“Bit of dirt fell on me hand once”, he tells us. His wife, Leanne, fills in the details: there was a cave-in that saw Pete rushed to hospital. She tells of how he had to climb up a swinging ladder for 60 feet with one hand to escape the mine. “The Flying Doctors flew him to Dubbo and he was there for a week to put a steel pin in it.” More than a bit of dirt, perhaps…

“What’s the greatest opal you’ve ever found?”

“There was this one stone we called the Bread Loaf”, Pete chuckles. It was a large green and orange coloured stone which, as its name suggests, looked like a loaf of bread. Leanne insists that it was the “ugliest thing.” Well, each to their own! “The eye of the beholder”, Leanne says.

Pete continues to explain that a miner “might get a good haul one month and then you get six months without a stone”.

“So what keeps you going?”

“Well the best thing is having a good find. Opal is amazing stuff to look at. Its an amazing stone! You can see the quality of a good stone and think “Gee that’s nice!” And there’s not ever two opals the same!”

Touring the Black Opal Fields

Pete took us on a tour of the nearby opal fields: Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard, which house the largest deposits of black opal in the world. He showed up some of the local attractions (see the photo gallery below) and explained a little of what’s involved in opal mining.

Once a claim is made on an area, a vertical shaft is sunk between 5 and 25 meters into the ground. This is to intersect the levels of the earth hoped to contain opal. The miner then digs horizontal tunnels or drives into the opal levels. If an area shows potential for opal, the ground consisting of clay or sandstone is removed with a jackhammer or hydraulic digging machine.

On our way through the fields, these mine mounds are a common sight:

Once removed from the mine, the dirt is taken in truckloads to an agitator (aka. ‘aggie’, which is like a modified cement mixer) to be tumble washed in water.

Once the dirt and clay are removed, the hard parts remain to be sorted through with a keen eye for colour!

Lightning Ridge is a great place to acquire your own rare, one-of-a-kind, locally mined black opal! Should you find yourself in the possession of such a stone, we’d love to help you create a custom jewellery piece, as befitting your timeless Australian treasure!

Check out some of our custom design work for ideas of what to do with your opal, here.

A Perfect Match! Find the Right Wedding Band for your Engagement Ring

If you’ve been having a hard time matching a wedding band with your unique engagement ring, you’re not alone! It’s an important decision to get right, since while you might only wear your dress for one day, you may be wearing your wedding band for the rest of your life…

And we’re happy to lend a helping hand!

Here are a few of our pointers for finding a wedding band that matches your engagement ring perfectly!

Mind the  gap!

Commonly, the frustration we experience when attempting to pair an engagement ring with a wedding band is caused as the centre stone/s push against the band, causing them to sit adjar. But don’t fret,  this frustration can be easily overcome! There are several options for avoiding a gap between your engagement ring and band. Sometimes, the center stone can be slightly raised to allow a band to fit comfortably underneath. Alternatively, the band can be  created to follow the shape of the engagement ring. While this option can make your engagement ring and band look larger, you will need to consider whether you prefer to wear both rings together, as a shaped band won’t look quite the same when worn on its own.

Karina_diamond_engagement_princess_Matching_wedding_band_pave Karina_diamond_engagement_princess_Matching_wedding_band_pave_set

Sophisticated and practical!

If you are looking for a sleek, sophisticated look, consider a simple band with clean lines. While being timelessly modern, a minimal design is also highly practical!

At Bilingual, we love to think outside the box when it comes to wedding rings – and all jewellery design, really! We have a lot of fun coming up with unique and striking designs, like this engagement and wedder set (below). This Art Deco inspired duo are set in platinum and the number of diamonds and their placement is symbolic of different elements in the couple’s relationship.

Kristin had been wearing our Act Deux ring for seven years, which she had bought together with her partner. She loved it so much that when they became engaged, she had it turned into a wedding ring! Her engagement ring was also custom made to match her Act Deux wedding ring (below). Both are platinum, featuring princess-cut diamonds and geometric cut-outs.

While you may not always want to wear your wedding band and engagement ring together, they should still strike a harmony as a duet.  Balance and scale are particularly important – especially that the band doesn’t overpower the engagement ring.

Due to its colouring, rose gold is a very subtle choice for most skin tones. Consider a rose gold band to allow your engagement ring or feature stones to stand out without competition.

Get some inspiration and have a browse through our custom wedding and engagement designs! Or think about whether one of our collection pieces might suit you.

We’d love to chat about your ideas and help you find a perfect wedding set. Book a free consultation today!

Anniversary 13

14th – Animals . Gold . Opal

Historically, ivory was the the traditional gift for a couple’s 14th anniversary. But since endangered elephant populations make this an unethical choice, we recommend visiting them in the zoo instead. If animals aren’t your thing, there are an abundance of exciting design options incorporating opal and gold materials. We’d love to explore this avenue with you!

Anniversary 14

15th – Crystal . Glass . Watches . Rubies

Crystal is the traditional material for a couple’s 15th anniversary, with glass, watches and rubies being the modern alternatives. A watch for him… A ruby for her… Fair trade!

Anniversary 15

20th Anniversary – China . Platinum . Emerald

Due to its rarity as a metal, platinum is associated with exclusivity and wealth. Meanwhile, each emerald is unique as they include inclusions characteristic of the stone. How could we use emerald or platinum in a design to celebrate the milestone of your 20th anniversary? Check out our blog post on emeralds, here.

Anniversary 20

25th Anniversary – Silver

25 years will see a couple to their Silver Anniversary. With so many options available, we suggest something personal from our Momento or Milestone collections, which include pendants, rings, earrings, cufflinks and bangles. These personalised pieces feature your special date in Roman Numerals and can be customised in a variety of ways to suit you!

Anniversary 25

30th Anniversary – Pearl . Diamond

Celebrate 30 years with the elegant sophistication of diamonds and pearls. Our Wisdom collection reflects upon the cycle of learning and the sharing of wisdom, which during 30 years of marriage, we’re sure has grown rich and valuable!

Anniversary 30b

35th Anniversary – Coral . Jade

Your 35th anniversary gives you the chance to play with some interesting materials: coral and jade. Both offer unique design options and can be incorporated into our existing Bilingual collection, such as this Jade cabochon in our C Stone Ring design.

Anniversary 35

40th Anniversary – Ruby

Rubies are extremely strong and resilient gemstones! And If there is one gemstone that represents the passion of love, it is the ruby! We think they look particularly lovely in our Milestone designs, but if you want to make something custom, we’d love to work with you!

Anniversary 40

45th Anniversary – Sapphire

At Bilingual we are passionate about sapphires! Sapphires come in a rainbow of colours; yellow, orange, pink, light blue, dark blue, purple, green and even a mix of blue green. These gorgeous stones are incredibly strong & are cut in an assortment of shapes; round, cushion, emerald, marquise, pear, oval & baguette – just to name a few! Like a work of art, you can stare at a sapphire for hours – they are truly captivating! How could we use sapphire to celebrate your 45th anniversary?

Anniversary 45

50th Anniversary – Gold

55th Anniversary – Emerald

The unique individuality of the emerald makes it a beautiful stone to celebrate a 55th anniversary. Its colour also symbolizes vitality and faithfulness. We can custom-make an emerald piece for you or incorporate it into an existing Bilingual design.

For Mum, From Bilingual

Can you remember a special jewellery piece that belonged to your mother or grandmother? Our mum’s jewellery can often evoke precious memories of her and remind us of family history. Here are some stories that people have kindly shared with us:

“When I was a child, my mother had a gold belcher-chain bracelet with charms she’d collected throughout her life. I remember sitting next to her in church, playing with the small animals and symbols, making up stories in my head and imagining the places they’d come from. I thought it was wonderful!” – Jessica

“My mum always wore long necklaces with wooden beads. She gave a couple to me and I feel a bit like her when I wear them – in a good way! They still carry the scent of her perfume.” – Kate

“This is my mother’s charm bracelet. She also wore a gold padlock chain that is so worn from wear that the links have almost worn through. She died 39 years ago. I still have both her bracelets.” – Wendy

“My family is from Germany and this ring has been in our family for many generations. My grandfather had a brother and he made it – my great uncle. It was made for my great grandmother and then was given to my mum who also wore it.” – Dorothee

There are two options for how these loops are orientated.” – Bilingual Design

Shadow Bangle in Sterling Silver with matte and oxidized finish. ($355)

Something WARM, FEMININE & UNIQUELY SUBTLE in Rose and Yellow gold.

Creating Commemorative Design

At Bilingual, we are passionate about creating meaningful jewellery! It’s a joy to so often be designing pieces that have the special function of commemorating important things in life. For many of us, certain jewellery pieces are powerful reminders of who we are, what we’ve been through and the people and events that have held a special place in our lives.

Typically, there are three main ways that we go about creating these commemorative pieces: either by modifying an existing jewellery piece, re-using stones or creating something completely new that has symbolic meaning.

Like each person, each piece has a unique story. Here are just a few…

The Modified

Some of our commemorative jewellery designs are created from original jewellery pieces, keeping parts of the original form intact, though they are modified in some way to make the piece more wearable. This gold wedding band (above, left) was adapted into a pendant in our classic Momento style. In the pendant below, our customer’s late mother’s wedding ring was redesigned to feature a cross in the centre that holds onto the ring without altering it.

An antique pin is transformed into a ring, while two inherited pieces have been joined as one in this contemporary family heirloom (above).

The Sentimental Stone

Using a stone that belonged to someone special, or was given to you to mark an occasion or relationship, can be a powerful form of commemoration while allowing freedom for your own style and personality.

Chiara’s custom-designed ring (below) incorporates a diamond that was given to her with a new sapphire, drawing on imagery of ‘day and night’.

“I decided to trust a precious stone (rose quartz in bracelet, above) in memory of my baby to create a piece I could wear every day to remember her – Marta was truly remarkable, she ensured every details was explored and perfect for this piece – I could not hold back the tears opening the parcel to see the masterpiece she has created in memory of my daughter – I wear it proudly and am so grateful to Marta for her compassion and skill to bring this piece to fruition for me 8 years on from her death.  I would entrust Bilingual with any project you may have – they are extraordinary, talented and exceptionally personable.” – Renee from Mildura

The New Piece

Of course, we can also make you something completely new to commemorate an occasion or loved one.

To preserve the original medals (below) we had a mould made so the exact form of the medal could be incorporated into custom-designed cufflinks.

The ring above was designed in memory of our customer’s mother. Her birth date was inscribed in roman numerals and the pink gemstones represent her love of all things pink. It also features engraving on the inside of the band.

With so many ways to create commemorative jewellery we’re sure we can find the perfect way to create your meaningful piece. What are the things in your life that are worth special commemoration?

The Bilingual Design Process: Fiona’s Ring

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience our unique custom design process?

Our exclusive method is far more involved than you may think… Here, we share Fiona’s journey with you!

Bilingual_design prosess_final_ring_custom_Fiona

1. Beginning the Design Process: Consultation & Concept

The first step in our design process was to meet with Fiona to find out a bit more about her, discuss her ideas and dreams, and how we could create a beautiful ring for her. She filled out our special questionnaire designed to uncover some of the things that held meaning for her, and from this, we developed some themes and concepts to drive the design of her ring. We then displayed these ideas visually as a concept board.

2. Design Options

Based on Fiona’s concepts, we developed a couple of design options for her to choose from.

3. Second Consultation & Measuring

Fiona met with us a second time to discuss the design options and decide which one she would like to develop into the final ring. She chose design option 1 to be made into 9ct Yellow Gold, featuring a white freshwater pearl. We also measured Fiona’s finger to make sure her new ring would fit her perfectly.

4. Production & Presentation of the Final Piece.
